it seems

A VARIETY OF EXERCISE FORMS IS BETTER THAN JUST ONE. Since Physique Pictorial takes no paid ads and sells no athletic equipment, we consider ourselves in a position to give a less biased view than some of the books which depend on equipment sales. We have taken photographs of approximately 1500 athletes and have interviewed them all on their physical training habits. It has become quite clear to us that there are many many ways of achieving the same end results. Barbells and dumbells seem to be the fastest and most effective way of achieving a better body and at the same time. that weightlifting cut build the most interesting defined upper bodies but are often quite deficient in legs. enthusiasts are much quicker to lose their gains than any other group. Acrobats and fellows who use playground apparatus While few are able to build creditable bodies by calisthentics alone, many seem to keep their bodies in condition that way. Only one of the bodybuilders we photographed accredited his build to so-called "dynamic tension" alone (and he was a rath er slender fellow) but a number of fellows claim it helped them gain definition. Almost all of the fellows except the weightlifters (and even some of them) engage in several forms of sports such as swimming and football. Invariably the finest, most "interesting" bodies with maximum bulk and definition and stability are the results of a great variety of training methods, outdoor sports etc. Rarely are these fellows food faddists, but rather they eat a variety of wholesome foods. Few bother with food supplements, protein pills etc., though many have experimented with them.

The average man should face facts and realize that no simple little gadget like a $3 rubber pulley and other similar items will give him the kind of a build as the man usually pictured using it in the ad. Unless a man is born with a predisposition towards an outstanding build, it may take lots of work to get one.

It is our belief that fewer people (particularly in the group after 25) should concern themselves with having a superbuild, but rather should settle for keeping their physique trim and healthy.
